<div data-wrapper="true" style="font-size: 12px; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif">
The Home Office is the lead UK government department for immigration and visas, passports, policing, fire and rescue services and ensuring protection of UK citizens. The area of the Home Office that you will be directly dealing with is called UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

Your asylum claim will be processed and assessed by UKVI’s Immigration and Protection Directorate. Whether your asylum claim is successful will depend on Immigration & Protection’s assessment, and they will be in contact with you about the decision that is made.

There are several stages in the asylum process. How long this takes depends on your circumstances, but you will not be removed from the UK while your case is being considered, unless another country is responsible for considering your asylum claim.

The first stage is normally a screening interview which should take place when you first claim asylum. The main reason for the screening interview is to register your request to claim asylum, establish your identity, how you arrived in the UK and what particular needs you may have.

Watch a video about the screening interview on Migrant Help’s YouTube channel.

You will only need to answer basic questions and will not be asked for in-depth information about your asylum claim at this stage. You will also be asked if you would prefer to be interviewed by a male or female interviewing officer.

Your substantive interview (main asylum interview) will take place at a later date. Please note that information you provide at the substantive interview will be checked for consistency against what you said at the screening interview and any statements you have provided, such as the Preliminary Information Questionnaire (PIQ). If you phone to book your screening interview you will be asked some basic questions over the phone. You will have the opportunity to confirm these when you attend your appointment.

Please make the Home Office aware of any vulnerabilities or immediate needs you or your dependants have.

If you would like to speak to the appointment line for the asylum intake unit, please call: 0208 196 4524, Monday to Thursday 9am to 4:45pm and Friday 9am to 4:30pm.
