<div data-wrapper="true" style="font-size: 12px; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif"> <p>If you fear returning to your country of origin and believe that you will qualify for international protection as a refugee (or under the rules regarding humanitarian protection), you should claim asylum.</p> <p>To be recognised as a refugee under the Refugee Convention, you must have left your country and be unable to go back because you have a well-founded fear of persecution, based on one or more of the following reasons:</p> <ul> <li style="list-style-position: inside">Your race</li> <li style="list-style-position: inside">Your religion</li> <li style="list-style-position: inside">Your nationality</li> <li style="list-style-position: inside">Your political opinion; or</li> <li style="list-style-position: inside">Anything else that puts you at risk because of the social, cultural, religious or political situation in your country (for example your gender, gender identity or sexual orientation)</li> </ul> <p>If your asylum claim is refused, but there are other grounds for believing that you would face a real risk of suffering serious harm if you were to return to your country, then you may qualify for another form of leave, including humanitarian protection or discretionary leave.</p> <p>You should claim asylum when you arrive in the UK or as soon as you think it would be unsafe for you to return to your own country. If you do not claim as soon as you can, the decision maker will need to consider the reason you give for making a late claim and if it damages your credibility.</p> <p>If you do not think you have a claim for international protection (asylum or humanitarian protection) but would still like to remain in the United Kingdom for other reasons, you can find information here, or you may choose to seek legal advice.</p> <p>If your claim for international protection is refused, it may affect any further applications for leave to visit the UK.</p> </div>
