<div data-wrapper="true" style="font-size: 12px; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif">
The interview may take place in a Home Office building, or, if you are being interviewed via video conference, a building of a Home Office commercial partner. If you are receiving asylum support and live more than three miles from the interview centre, you should be given a travel ticket to enable you to attend your asylum interview. If it is not the nearest centre, and you have to travel a long way, the Home Office may arrange overnight accommodation. You will need to contact the Home Office to arrange travel. You will need to give as much notice as possible. You can also contact Migrant Help on 0808 8010 503 for assistance with this.

When you arrive, you will need to go through security. This is nothing to be alarmed about and is purely for safety reasons. You will be asked to remove any coats, jackets or belts and place them in a tray with the contents of your pockets. Your luggage and bags will be placed through a scanner or hand searched. Any items not allowed will be taken from you and can be collected when you leave. Any items that are deemed to be offensive weapons will be taken away.

You may need to wait in reception until a caseworker calls you (and your representative, if you have one) into an interview room.

The Home Office will provide an interpreter for the interview if you need one. They must interpret what you say accurately, so that the Home Office has a full record of the information you provide. Interpreters are required to keep any information you provide strictly confidential. If you have any concerns about your interpreter, or do not fully understand their accent or dialect, you should raise this with the Home Office caseworker immediately. It will not affect how your case is decided or the outcome of your case.

You are able to request a break at any time during your interview.

Free childcare during asylum interviews

It could be distressing for your child to hear you talking about your experiences at the interview, and difficult for you to be open about your reasons for seeking asylum in front of your children.

If you are the sole carer of a child/children under 5 years old, the Home Office can provide free childcare while you attend your main asylum interview.

While in the interview, your children will play safely in a playroom on site or in a nearby nursery, supervised by fully trained and accredited child carers. The service is free, but you will need to bring any snacks and medication your child needs.

Your invitation to interview letter will ask if you would like to use the childcare facilities. Make it clear that you would like to use the facilities by the date required in your invitation letter. You will be given a number to call and you will be asked to provide the following details:

• Your Home Office reference number

• Your full name, date of birth, nationality and present address

• Full name(s) of your child/children, date(s) of birth, nationality

• Any medical/mobility issues your child has
